Guides for Parents

Home Reading

Your child must be reading every day!

We use lots of different reading scheme books for home reading.  We have recently bought some Oxford Reading Tree books which seem to be very popular with the children.

Your child will be sent home a book that comes from a colour book band. This is for your child to read to you.  They should be able to read the book independently, building confidence and fluency.  Your child will have a slightly harder book in class that they are working on with their class teacher.

The reading books are graded by difficulty by reading levels known as book bands.  Each book band has its own colour.  A child becomes a ‘free reader’ at our school once the class teacher assesses them as fluent within the purple book band.  The child can then decide on which book to read, with a little guidance from the class teacher.  This can be from our well stocked book corners in the classrooms, our school library or a book from home.

Below you can find details of the features of each book band level and what you can do to support your child in each book band.

Your child will also have a reading record book where you and/or your child can write about what they have enjoyed about the book, what page they have got up to or what they may have found difficult.

If you wish to discuss your child’s reading please do not hesitate to make an appointment with your child’s class teacher via the school office.
