Relationships Education
To embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their well-being, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Pupils can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult decisions in their lives. These subjects can support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support.
High quality evidence-based and age-appropriate teaching of these subjects can help prepare pupils for their opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. They can also enable schools to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, at school and in society.
At St Alban's CE Primary School, we want children to develop the skills to make positive, caring, respectful and healthy relationships; in their friendships, within their families and with other children and adults. We recognise that many children in primary already have active online lives and that the knowledge and skills they learn in Relationships Education will enable them to navigate the online world safely and understand what is and is not appropriate and respectful behaviour. Through this, pupils also gain the knowledge they need to recognise and report abuse, including emotional, physical and sexual abuse and keep themselves safe, online and offline.
We are committed to creating an inclusive school that promotes diversity and equality and fundamental British Values. Teaching Relationships Education will ensure that all children develop respect for others and for difference, and tolerance and understanding of all aspects of diversity. We want all children to understand and feel accepted in the society they are growing up in and for every child to thrive in modern Britain.
