English including phonics and reading schemes

English:  Daily Guided Reading is in addition to an hour of English. We use a wide range of reading schemes for Guided Reading including Alphakids, Wildcats, Rigby, Literacy Links and 'real novels'. We have just purchased a new reading scheme, Oxford Reading Tree, for home reading in Reception and KS1.

We also use Power of Reading Literacy which is about the teaching of English through the use of high quality books.  The approach aims to engage and motivate children in their English learning and deepen their understanding of texts, providing a meaningful context for writing.  The quality texts are used as the basis for learning over several weeks.

Ruth Miskin phonics programme (Read Write Inc) is taught instead of English in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. This is a very intense phonics/reading programme. When children are secure in their phonics they attend an English lesson. This may be in Year 1 or Year 2. Children in Key Stage 2 will join the programme if they need to. Year 1 and Year 2 also have dedicated guided reading sessions every day.
